The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department has implemented an Artificial Intelligence (AI) camera-based enforcement system to improve road safety and curb traffic violations in the state of Kerala, India. The AI camera system is installed on the major roads and junctions across the state and uses advanced computer vision algorithms to detect and capture images and videos of vehicles violating traffic rules such as jumping signals, overspeeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, etc.
There are 726 Artificial intelligence camera installed in Kerala. 675 camera were used to detect two wheeler riders without helmet and four wheeler riders without seat belt and catch vehicle for that do not stop vehicle after accident happen. There will be 25 cameras that be used to illegal parking and 18 camera to catch people ignoring red light. A control room system will be setup in every district in Kerala.
What for fines?
- Riding without helmet and seatbelt : Rs.500
- Overspeed : Rs.1500
- Using mobile phone while driving : Rs.2000
- Illegal parking : Rs.250
- Without helmet in backseat : Rs.500
- Riding with 3 persons : Rs.1000
What does the camera monitoring?
- Riding without helmet
- More than two persons riding in two wheeler
- Driving over the line
- Riding four wheeler without seatbelt
- Using mobile phone while riding
If there is a long white line in the middle of road, it means should not be overtaken. If the yelllow line go through the middle instead of white line, there should be no overtaking under any circumstances. There will be a fine for crossing over the lines on curves. There are lot of reasons to get fined if the helmet strap is not worn properly , if the person sitting behind the two wheeler does not have a helmet, if the helmet does not have ISI mark etc. The AI camera’s have been working on an experimental basis for the past one year. According to the report, there 30,000 to 90,000 violations in every month. Violations will be recorded by camera as well. These camera will catch unauthorized modifications and silencer modifications also. The working hours of the camera’s are 24 hours. The number of camera’s is 81 in Thiruvanthapuram, 62 in Ernakulam and 60 in Calicut. So every drivers in kerala must obey rules and regulations for avoid getting caught by AI camera’s.
