India Post is a government-operated postal system in India, part of the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications. Generally known as the Post Office, it is one of the most widely distributed postal systems in the world. The company was founded by Warren Hastings under East India Company and became operational during 1766. It was initially established with different names such as “Company Mail” before being modified into a service under Crown control in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie who introduced uniform postage rates (universal service) and helped pass India’s first post office act which significantly improved upon an earlier law from 1837 that had introduced regular post offices throughout India. In 1863, there were over 1 million registered mail users across all districts while only 861 posts were available for general delivery. As a result, Director General Of Posts was created to oversee this growing network and its associated infrastructure including stations, depots etc.
The Indian Postal Service (DoP) is involved in delivering mail, remitting money by money orders, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance coverage under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms etc. The DoP also acts as an agent for the Indian government in discharging other services such as old age pension payments and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme wage disbursement. As of March 2017 there were 154,965 post offices across India.
