update your Aadhaar once in every 10 year!

Aadhaar is the world’s most extensive biometric identification system. According to World Bank Chief Economist Paul Romer, Aadhaar is “the most sophisticated ID programme in the world.” Aadhaar, as a proof of residence rather than citizenship, does not grant any rights to domicile in India. The Home Ministry clarified in June 2017 that Aadhaar is not a valid identification document for Indians visiting Nepal and Bhutan. Prior to the enactment of the Act, the UIDAI had functioned, since 28 January 2009, as an attached office of the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog). On 3 March 2016, a money bill was introduced in the Parliament to give legislative backing to Aadhaar. On 11 March 2016, the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and other Subsidies, benefits and services) Act, 2016, was passed in the Lok Sabha.

Is your Aadhaar card more than a decade old? If this is the case, you should modify two key documents – Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) – in accordance with the new authority notification 2022. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has reissued a notice stating that individuals who received their Aadhaar card more than a decade ago must update their explains. These regulations, known as the Aadhaar(Enrolment and Update)(Tenth Amendment) Regulations, 2022, went into effect on November 9, 2022. According to the amendment, individuals must modify their supporting documents in Aadhaar, at most once narrated to identity proof and address proof.

“Aadhaar number holders may update their supporting documents in Aadhaar at least once every 10 years from the date of enrolment for Aadhaar, by submitting Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents as specified under Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulation 10 hereinabove, so as to ensure continued accuracy of their information in the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR), in such manner as the Authority may specify from time to time.

It should be noted that UIDAI offers document update services to Aadhaar number holders for a fee, allowing them to update the Proof of Personal Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents in their Aadhaar data. This service is available both online and offline. It can be obtained online through the My Aadhaar Portal (https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/), or residents can visit any nearby Enrollment Center.
